THE TUBE

London Underground is a transport network of public electric railway that runs both above and below land throughout the Greater London area. It is the world's oldest transport system of this way.

It became operational on January 10 1863. Londoners often refer to it in a more familiar way as the Tube because of the shape of its tunnels.

Today there are 274 stations open and over 408 kilometers of lines active, with over three million passengers who use the subway every day. It is the second metro system in the world (after Shanghai) for miles and the first of the European Union.
