MOUNT RUSHMORE

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial, is a monumental sculpture carved into a granite mountain located in Keystone, South Dakota. It commemorates the birth, growth, preservation and development of the United States of America.

Sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and later by his son Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features sculptures of the heads of former United States presidents (in order from left to right) George Washington, Thomas Jefferson,  Theodore Roosevelt  and Abraham Lincoln

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is 5.17 km ². Each head is 18 m high, on average, the nose of each measuring 6 m long, 5.5 m mouth and eyes wide, 3.4 m from one extreme to another.

To give character and expression to the faces on that scale it had to be a master stroke: Borglum gave the eyes a spark of life leaving a granite column of about 56 cm long as a pupil, so that the sunlight brings out against the shadow that this form.
